    The Field Auto Appraiser is responsible for inspecting and estimating auto damage for 1st and 3rd parties, negotiating with body shops for an agreed price, managing repair and/or handling total losses and salvage for both personal and commercial lines claims. This person will serve as a technical resource for inside and field staff and will provide advice to others for claims outside the designated territory. This position will work under moderate supervision with high expectations on customer service and timeliness of claims handling.


    • Primary handling, negotiation and settlement of auto and heavy truck repairs. In person estimate and damage assessment at body shop, insured or claimant’s premises and storage locations such as tow yards.
    • Obtain vehicle photos, assess vehicle value, property document vehicle condition.
    • Evaluate for total loss and handle accordingly; collection of total loss documents required for equitable disposal of salvage; monitoring and management of assigned salvage.
    • Negotiation in person the estimate, days to repair and agreed repairs with body shop; regular follow up on repair status until completion.
    • Meet with insureds and claimants to review and discuss damages; issue payment.
    • Ensure accurate and timely completion of relevant fields in ACC.
    • Compliance with tax laws, total loss and salvage statutes and compliance with unfair claims practices for the jurisdiction.
    • Follow corporate guidelines regarding personal data, rental, APD, salvage and total loss procedures.



    • Two year college degree or graduate of a Vocational Technical Institute required; 4 year college degree preferred
    • Insurance related designations a plus; AIC, CPCU, IIA
    • I-CAR or other industry related and pre-approved training and certification preferred, or willingness to attain at agreed upon timeframe



    • 2 -5 years of body repair experience or 2-5 years of vehicle damage estimating experience.


    Knowledge, skills & abilities:

    • Ability to manage time and schedule to inspect vehicles within regional goals.
    • Ability to work from home or branch office.
    • Follow corporate guidelines for fleet vehicle use and company cell phone policy.
    • Obtain and maintain relevant designation and continuing education.
