UFG is seeking a claims attorney to mnitor and direct the handling of claims in suit.  This position will provide legal advice and counsel in support of our insurance operations with an emphasis on litigation and claim advice and insurance policy interpretation.

 

Responsibilities

  • Handle suits on claim files, including collaborating with and managing outside counsel and complex litigated claims files as assigned.
  • Analyze coverage issues on litigated claim files, and claim files with potential for litigation.
  • Interact with claims management to analyze insurance coverage, liability and damages.
  • Assist with negotiations, mediations, arbitrations and settlement procedures as assigned.
  • Interact with claims management to analyze insurance coverage, liability and damages.
  • Provide analysis of litigated matters and evaluation of exposure to claims management.
  • Render opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the claims department.
  • Review and discuss settlement values, defense tactics and strategies with defense counsel. 
  • Negotiate fees and billing agreements with attorneys. 
  • Review fee statements, negotiate adjustment of charges when appropriate.
  • Participate in mediations and negotiating settlements.
  • Draft reservation of rights and coverage denial letters.
  • Communicate with agents as appropriate to keep advised of status, difficult claims situations and coverage questions.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from an accredited law school required
  • Active license to practice law in at least one state required.
  • 5+ years of legal experience required, P&C insurance claims experience preferred.
  • A general knowledge of insurance law and specific understanding of the operations and requirements of insured clients, customers and the company.
  • Advanced critical thinking and analytical ability
  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload
  • Literacy in claims, underwriting, and other insurance principles
  • Outstanding legal-writing and general written and verbal communication skills
