United Life is seeking a Human Resources Generalist in their Cedar Rapids office. As a direct report to Human Resource Manager, this role is critical to front-line employee relations at United Life Insurance Company and to ensuring the HR functions at United Life are responsive to the organization as whole. Our ideal candidate will be skilled in managing compensation, benefits, training, performance management and employee relations in a manner that attracts, motivates and retains employees and builds our brand in the marketplace.







  • Manage talent acquisition process (including sourcing, interviewing, hiring and onboarding) and benefit enrollment process
  • Keeps job descriptions up-to-date, accurate and compliant with relevant federal, state and local laws for all positions
  • Assists with the development of training and performance management programs that ensures all employees are familiar with their job responsibilities
  • Creates and updates compensation strategy through market analysis and pay surveys
  • Handles investigation and resolution of employee issues, concerns and conflicts
  • Maintains personnel files in compliance with applicable legal requirements.
  • Keeps employee records up to date by processing employee status changes in timely fashion.
  • Maintains listing of approved positions along with assigned salary grade levels.
  • Maintains budget spreadsheet that includes salaries, payroll taxes and fringe allowances.
  • Maintains the employee handbook with updated resolutions and other pertinent information, as needed.







  • 7-10 years of HR experience in a medium to large-size organization
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Organizational Development, Labor Relations or Business
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in written and verbal communication
  • Judgment and decision making – solves difficult problems with effective, practical solutions
  • Flexible – embraces change and new information to adapt work and behavior
  • Continuous learning – loves asking ‘why’ and learning about new things
  • Knowledge of compensation strategy, performance management, employee relations and talent acquisition, and the ability to apply this information in a manner that is compliant with relevant employment law
  • Experience with creating a culture of engagement, collaboration and teamwork
  • Capable of compiling and analyzing employment data to guide strategic planning
