UFG Insurance is seeking experienced and highly-motivated applicants for the position of Assistant General Counsel. The position, which reports to the General Counsel, involves providing a wide range of support and legal advice on complex legal matters to all departments within UFG.




  • Review, evaluate and offer advice and counsel on legal issues and claims files for the Group.
  • Read, screen and circulate legal publications pertinent to the UFG.
  • Review and give advice on claim files not in suit. Advice may concern coverage issues, liability issues, damage issues or any combination of those.
  • Offer advice and counsel on legal questions, contracts, policy terminology and personnel issues to other United Fire Group operating departments (Underwriting, Marketing, Accounting, and Human Resources).
  • Review and respond to reports and enclosures directed to claim files. Analyze investigative material for liability exposure, coverage and damages to determine reserves and settlement values.
  • Follow consistent reserve practices with a slightly pessimistic attitude to achieve the company guideline of overall reserve redundancy of 5 percent.
  • Maintain contact with corporate claims personnel and counsel as necessary. Provide direction, control and guidance to those for whom responsible, including defense counsel.
  • Be aware of the expense factor in claims handling; whether by company representative, independent or defense counsel, in order to achieve company standards.
  • Keep an active diary file and regularly review claims being supervised by others where the potential for large exposure exists. 
  • Supervise claims involving Employment Related Practices policies, Errors and Omissions policies, pollution claims and other specialty claims either directly or through the efforts of others.

  • Be constantly aware of the expense factor in claims handling; whether by company representative, independent adjuster or defense counsel, in order to achieve company standards.

  • Attend Bar Association meetings as necessary to stay informed of developments, meet and stay acquainted with other counsel. Attend continuing education seminars as required.




  • Law degree plus admission to practice in at least one state.
  • 5-10 years total claims and legal experience to function properly in the position.
  • P&C insurance experience helpful.
  • Must possess strong knowledge of applicable law, policy coverage and damage evaluation procedures.
  • Ability to analyze complex legal issues and provide recommendations for well-reasoned, practical solutions and alternatives.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively work with various departments and levels within the company
  • Analytical ability to interpret statutes, regulations, insurance policies and other contracts.  
  • Excellent judgment, attention to detail and ability to handle sensitive and confidential information is required
