Overview

 

We’re looking for an ambitious, career-minded individual with a strong financial aptitude and outstanding people skills for a professional career in Commercial Surety Underwriting. 

 

As a Surety Underwriter Trainee, you’ll learn to produce and underwrite a profitable book of surety business by building and maintaining strong relationships with independent agents.

 

You’ll use your analytical and decision-making skills to evaluate risk and determine acceptability within company parameters. On-the-job training will help develop your ability to determine acceptability of surety submissions, perform analysis of financial statements, review applications, analyze credit reports, as well as learn to use other sources of investigation. 

 

The training program will also help you work toward a profitable and controlled level of growth by servicing existing business, and meeting or exceeding the department annual goals and objectives. Additionally, you’ll learn to recognize opportunities and make recommendations on existing accounts.

Through travel with underwriters, you’ll learn what makes agency visits successful, and well as how to market our commercial surety products to existing and new agents.

 

Responsibilities

  • Learn to efficiently underwrite new surety submissions. Gather information regarding financial status, credit standing, and contract exposures to analyze and determine acceptability of the risk.
  • Interaction with agents who do business with UFG.
  • Become experienced in new market development; ability to prospect, appoint and manage producer relationships to achieve production and profitability objectives.
  • Learn how to develop a profitable book of surety business of varying degrees of complexity for assigned territory, taking into consideration the strengths and weaknesses of the producer plant /territory and competitors, divisional objectives and overall market conditions.
  • Development and implementation of policy, procedures and standards to produce profitable underwriting results. 
  • Make prompt, sound decisions within underwriting authority based on appropriate underwriting information consultation.
  • Demonstrate accountability for accurate underwriting documentation/ information in account management systems and adherence to documentation standards.
  • Negotiate terms and conditions consistent with market segment requirements and standards within submission timeframe.
  • Attend selected industry events that provide interactions with producers and/or potential accounts.
  • Independently exhibit initiative with strong focus on results.
  • Responsibility for building and maintaining effective business relationships with internal and external customers/coworkers in order to attract and retain profitable business.
  • Identify and assist in developing automation initiatives for the commercial product lines and agency needs.
  • Participate on special projects and key initiative teams. 
  • Some travel is required, including overnight stays; this will increase with experience, up to 10% of time will be traveling throughout the country. Must have a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

  • Four year college degree is strongly desired, with a major in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance or Economics preferred. 
  • Actively engaged in additional industry and professional development and designations (AFSB, CPCU, MBA, etc.).  Additional classes and training required. UFG offers tuition reimbursement.
  • Effective analytical and interpersonal skills and experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel. 
  • Proficiency in risk evaluation, contract knowledge, common sense judgment and big picture views.
  • Strong communication (written and verbal), influencing, negotiating, listening and interpersonal skills to effectively develop/maintain productive internal and external relationships.
  • An ability and willingness to learn financial analysis; an aptitude for numbers and finance is desired. 
  • Ability to maintain strong working relationships with agency force to attract profitable business for UFG. 
  • Excellent decision-making; training will help advance these skills.
  • Ability to successfully deal with people in a tactful and diplomatic manner, to promote a positive company image with a focus on providing quality and timely service.
